March 8, Mother’s Day or Women’s Day?

In 1977, the UN General Assembly proclaimed a resolution of the United Nations Day for the Rights of Women and International Peace. A celebration of women recognized internationally, but without specifying a specific day has been approved since 1910 by the Socialist International gathered in Copenhagen. On the International Women’s Day in the West, the empowerment of women is celebrated to promote their rights and equality with men.Mother’s Day is generally celebrated every year, around the world on the second Sunday in May. About 70 countries around the world have, therefore, a common date for this holiday.

Australia, South Africa, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United States of America, Baltic States, Countries Of America, the southern countries of the Nordic countries, celebrate this day on the second Sunday of May.

In Romania, Mother’s Day was declared a public holiday since 2010 and is celebrated on the first Sunday of May. In Romania and Bulgaria, habits were preserved before the fall of Communism, when on March 8, on Mother’s Day, children gave presents to mothers, grandmothers, teachers and other women who were considered to be close.
